Data-driven fisheries: Smart satellite buoys take the stage at the European Parliament<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Brussels, 19th February 2025<\/strong> \u2013 The future of data-driven, sustainable fisheries took center stage at the European Parliament yesterday during the Competitive Blue Tech for Sustainable High Seas Fisheries<\/em> panel. Among the industry leaders invited to speak were the European Union Space Agency (EUSPA)<\/a>, CLS<\/a>, AZTI<\/a>, and Satlink<\/a>\u2014speaking also on behalf of Marine Instruments<\/a> and Zunibal<\/a>, the three leading global providers of smart satellite buoys, which manufacture over 95% of the world\u2019s smart buoys.<\/p>\n

Representing all three companies, Kathryn Gavira, Satlink\u2019s Head of Science and Sustainability, led the discussion on Data-driven fisheries: Smart satellite buoys at the forefront of EU innovation<\/em>. Gavira highlighted how EU-developed buoy technology has transformed high-seas fisheries into one of the most transparent, efficient and data-driven industries in the world, supporting both environmental sustainability and global food security.<\/p>\n

\u201cEU smart buoys technology is unique; something to be proud of and protect. It reflects European innovation and investment, and is leading the way for the most data rich and one of the most successful fisheries in the world, ensuring a reliable, affordable, and low-impact source of protein for consumers,\u201d said Gavira.<\/p>\n

Smart satellite buoys serve as a key source of real-time data, enhancing decision-making, scientific research, and transparency across the sector. Their role is central to advancing the EU Ocean Pact, contributing to the UN Ocean Decade, and reinforcing EU\u2019s leadership in global marine technology.<\/p>\n
